When Do Termites Swarm in Central FL?

When their colonies become too large to accommodate, termites swarm to seek out fresh food sources and new homes. Termites swarm when the weather improves to the point where they can spend a short time outside looking for their new nesting site. That usually happens in Central FL around the end of February or the beginning of March.

Keep an eye out for small winged termites in your yard if you haven’t seen a swarm before. This could mean that a termite colony is looking for a new home on your property, or worse. There’s also a chance this indicates that a large termite colony has already established itself in your home and is starting up a new swarm.

How to Termite-Proof Your Home

You can reduce the chances of a termite infestation in your home by taking some steps before the swarming season begins. We recommend you follow these four steps to protect your home from termites:

  1. Keep moisture levels to a minimum: Termites seek out moisture and water-damaged wood, so make sure that your gutters are in working order, your siding isn’t rotting or weakened, and your sprinklers arenโ€™t aimed at the side of your home.
  2. Stack your firewood far away: While it may be convenient to store your firewood near your home, it significantly increases the risk of a termite infestation that reaches your home’s internal structures. Store firewood off the ground and at least 20 feet away if you can.
  3. Consider an alternative to mulch: Although mulch is beneficial for the plants in your yard, termites love it, too. If you decide to use mulch, be sure not to lay it too close to your homeโ€™s siding and foundation.
  4. Fill cracks and gaps: Termites will search for any openings to your house’s structure that are accessible. Use a silicone-based caulk to seal up cracks in plumbing, roofing, foundation, siding, and anywhere else that you find them.
